Ke Kupu | Handmade Sapele Tiered Stand, Mid Century 4 Tier Open Shelf, Solid Wood Bow Front Bookcase | Entryway, Living Room, Record Storage
This piece is named for Ke Kupu, Hawaiian for "the sprout," the word for new growth and offspring. It was built for a young mother who needed a changing station, but its style and function were never locked to that one stage of life. Four graduated shelves, each stepping back a little from the one above, with a gently bowed front edge that gives this stand the feel of a mid century Danish piece without copying one. The ribbon figure in the sapele catches the light differently from every angle, so the stand looks a little different every time you walk past it. As the child grows out of needing a changing station, the piece keeps growing with the family, settling into life as an entryway console, a living room étagère, or record storage.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
Built from solid sapele, an African hardwood related to mahogany, with the boards chosen and arranged so the grain runs continuously across each shelf. The top tier has a raised back rail to keep books, plants, or a turntable from sliding off, and the two middle shelves have rounded front edges that are comfortable to reach past. The bottom shelf sits on a lightly arched stretcher that lifts the piece visually off the floor. Corner posts are tapered so the stand reads light and open, while mortise-and-tenon joinery keeps it rigid with no wobble. Finished with a hand-applied, hand-rubbed finish that brings up the depth in the grain and is easy to touch up years from now.
WHY MEJA
Every MEJA piece is designed and built by me, Jason in my shop in California. Solid hardwood only, no plywood or veneer, hand-cut joinery, and a hand-applied finish. MEJA Designs is an Etsy Star Seller with a 5.0 rating, and I stand behind every piece that leaves the shop.
ABOUT KE KUPU
This piece is named for Ke Kupu, Hawaiian for "the sprout," the word for new growth and offspring. It was originally built for a young mother as a changing station, but the style and function were never fixed to one stage of life. The piece doesn't disassemble or convert. It doesn't need to. As the child grows past needing a changer, it keeps serving as an entryway console, a living room shelf, or record storage, growing with the family instead of getting outgrown.
