Solid black walnut coffee table base, built by hand in our shop and designed for a natural stone top you have cut locally.

This listing is for the walnut base and a full-size cutting template for the stone top. Shipping stone across the country is expensive and risky, so we designed this table so any local stone fabricator can cut the top from a slab you choose. You pick the stone, whether travertine, marble, soapstone, or quartzite, and the top drops onto the frame with no hardware.

The base has four wide solid walnut slab legs shaped with softly rounded outer corners, joined by a slim walnut apron. The top is notched to fit around the legs, so the walnut end grain shows at each corner and the stone sits flush with the top of the legs. The result is a clean, low profile piece that reads as walnut wearing a stone cap. Photos show the base with a honed travertine top so you can see the finished look.

What's included: The finished walnut base, a full-size template for the stone top with the corner notches marked, a drawing with dimensions for your fabricator, and a materials note on recommended stone thickness and finish.

Dimensions shown: 60" wide, 30" deep, 18" tall with a 1.25" stone top installed. The base alone is 18" tall. Recommended stone thickness is 1.25" (3 cm), which is standard slab stock at most countertop shops.

Materials: Solid black walnut, hand-selected for straight, consistent grain and finished with a hardwax oil that brings out the color and protects the surface. The legs are solid, not veneered. Traditional joinery throughout.

Having the top cut: Any countertop or stone fabricator can cut this top from our template in a standard visit. Ask for a honed finish and a sealed surface. Typically, a 60" x 30" top is small enough to come from a remnant slab, which often costs a fraction of a full slab.

Care: Wipe the walnut with a damp cloth and reapply hardwax oil every few years to refresh the finish. Follow your fabricator's guidance for sealing and caring for the stone.

Lead time: Each base is made to order. Current build time is 3-4 weeks.

Shipping: The base ships blanket wrapped and crated.
